Debate Competition
Embasssy Cup 2015
General Regulations
  •   Participants are senior high school students or the ones at the equal degree in around Jabodetabek region.
  •   Participants must submit a copy of student card, two pieces of self-potraits (3 x 4), and the registration form.
  •   Participants who can not attend the technical meeting by themselves, agree with the result of technical meeting and are not able to object the result.
  •   Participants dress in their proper school uniform.
  •   Participats must come no later than 30 minutes before the competition starts to do the re-registration.
  •   Participants who get the turn to perform will be called for 3 times, participants will be disqualified if they do not come after the call.
  •   Participants are considered to be diqualified if they do not come 10 minutes after the competition starts.
  •   Participants who leave the room more than 15 minutes are considered to be disqualified.
  •   Every school is allowed to bring supporters.
  •   The judges are entitled to score the participants with the criterias set by the committee.
  •   The judges’ decisions are absolute and not able to be objected.
  •   Participants must follow all the regulations.

Competition Regulation
  •   The maximum team of each school is one team.
  •   This debate competition uses the Australia-Asia Debate system.
  •   It will be consisted of 2 teams: Affirmative team (ones who agree with the motion) and Opposition team (ones who do not agree with the motion).
  •   Every team has 3 speakers. It is consisted of first speaker, second speaker, and third speaker.
  •   Every team must prepare a reply speaker  who can be chosen from the first speaker or the second one.
  •   Each speaker is given 5 minutes to deliver arguments, meanwhile the reply speaker is given half of time to deliver arguments.
  •   The time given during the case buliding is 10 minutes.
  •   Motions will be informed to the participants in the technical meeting.
  •   Motions used in every round are determined by the committee.

Time
  •   Every speaker of both teams is only given 5 minutes to deliver arguments.
  •   Reply speaker is only given 2 minutes and 30 seconds or half of other speaker’s time to deliver arguments.
  •   At the first minute, there will be given a knock as the sign that participants enter the first minute and interruption is permitted.
  •   The second knock is the sign that the speaker has used 4 minutes of speaking.
  •   The knock will be done repeatedly when every speaker has given arguments for 5 minutes.

Speakers
  1. First speaker (Affirmative)
       Giving definitions of the motion (the debated topic.)
       Giving background
       Giving the limit of the topic.
       Giving teamline (dividing tasks of the first, second, and third speaker.)
       Giving teamsplit (dividing every speaker’s point of view)

2.       Second speaker (Opposition)
  •     Disagreeing the topic and giving rebuttal to everything that is stated by the speaker of the affirmative team.
  •   Giving teamsplit and teamline
  •   Giving arguments.
  •   Giving the linkback of every point why the speaker disagrees with the topic.    
3.     Second speaker (Affirmative and Opposition)

·         Rebutting the main case or even arguments of the opponent’s speaker.
·         Delivering arguments and strengthening each first speaker’s arguments.
·         Summarizing the whole speech.

4.       Third speaker (Affermative dan Opposition)
5.       Giving rebuttal to every argument of the opponent.
6.       Building the team’s cases back which are attacked by the opponent.

Reply Speaker
  •   Giving review of the debate that has been done.
  •   Rebuttal is not allowed.

  Review :
ü  Comparing the case between the both team.
ü  Giving reasons why their team should win in the debate.
Score
  1.   Matter / Material

  •   Whether the delivelered arguments are connected with the motion or not.
  •   Examples, problems, evidences, and logical facts of the topic stated in the arguments.
  •   Submission of arguments that consists of:

ü  Assertion (Statements)
ü  Reasons (any reasons that support assertion)
ü  Evidence (any proofs or datas that suppoert assertion and reasons.)
ü  Link Back (a skill to connect the three points above.)

2.Manner


  •   Fluency, eye contact, gesture, intonation, and other points about verbal communication
3.  .Method
  •   Method used by every speaker to the deliver arguments and do rebuttals.




v  Maximum score is 100.
